2010 Judicial Endorsements:

A special committee of the Ben F. Jones Chapter of the National Bar Association convened over the weekend to select candidates for several local judicial and court clerk offices for whom the organization would offer its official endorsement leading up to the August 5th general election. The ten-member panel, co-chaired by former judge D’Army Bailey and attorney Samuel Perkins, interviewed judicial candidates for Circuit Court Divisions IV and VIII and General Sessions Criminal Court Divisions 3, 7 and 10. The panel also heard from candidates seeking to become the next Shelby County Criminal, Circuit, Probate and Juvenile Court clerks. After interviewing many of the candidates, and proxies and supporters enlisted by the candidates to speak on their behalf, and reviewing applications submitted by the participating candidates, the committee offers the following endorsements:

Gina Higgins (Circuit Court Division IV); Venita Martin (Circuit Court Division VIII); Glenn Wright (General Sessions Criminal Court Division 3); Carolyn Watkins (General Sessions Criminal Court Division 7); Lee Wilson (General Sessions Criminal Court Division 10); Minerva Johnican (Criminal Court Clerk); Sondra Becton (Probate Court Clerk); and Shep Wilbun (Juvenile Court Clerk).

All of the candidates appearing before the committee this weekend were unquestionably qualified and deserving of the opportunity to be considered, however the committee feels that these particular candidates not only possess the skills, intellect and temperament to contribute positively to the bench, but also most strongly reflect the mission, goals and ideals of the National Bar Association.

We sincerely appreciate all of the candidates giving their time and energy to this process and are encouraged by the caliber of lawyers and candidates seeking to fill these positions.
